On our last trip to Washington, DC one of our Advisors, Dennis Moellman, set up a visit with Larry Davis, Chairman of the Department of Computer Science at the University of Maryland. U of MD has been a long-time participant in the VACE program and has developed some high quality video algorithms. So, Dennis thought it was important for Jerry and I to meet Larry and find out what they're up to.
Larry was kind enough to spend a couple of hours with us getting an idea of what Appscio is up to and describing his Computer Vision program. Of the roughly fifty people in the program, five are faculty and eight are research scientists. The computer vision research is generally focused on maritime biometrics, surveillance and something they call SmartVision applications.
Apparently, UofMD's human detection algorithms are extremely accurate (97%+) and vehicle classification reaching respectable accuracy (75-80%). They've done some interesting work with gneralized image (object) matching that we're planning to investigate for facial matching. They're also doing some interesting work (based on their human detection work) in tracking humans through the field of view of an array of cameras.
